Google Business Profile optimization is the fastest free way for a local business to win more calls from Google Maps. To optimize your Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate primary category, fill in every field Google offers, keep your hours (including holiday hours) correct, add real photos, and reply to every review. Then point the profile to a fast, matching page on your website so Google and customers see the same information in both places.
Most small businesses set up a profile once and never touch it again. That is a missed opportunity, because the profile is often the first thing a nearby customer sees before they call, get directions, or visit your site. Below is the checklist we use for home service pros, dental offices, restaurants, law firms and shops, in the order that tends to matter most.
Why your Google Business Profile matters for local search
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher), and prominence (how well known you are, including your reviews and links from other sites). Google also states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. (Source: Google Business Profile Help) That is why Google Business Profile optimization pays off so quickly.
You cannot move your address closer to customers, but you control almost everything else. The 2026 Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local SEO practitioners ranks these among the top five factors for the map pack:
- Primary Google Business Profile category
- Distance between the searcher and the business
- Keywords in the business name
- A physical address in the city being searched
- Business being open at the time of the search
Two of those five are settings in your profile (category and hours). One more, the business name, is a trap we cover below. That is why a 30-minute cleanup often does more for a local business than a month of blog posts.

The Google Business Profile optimization checklist
Work through these in order. Most owners can finish the first five in one sitting. Treat Google Business Profile optimization as a monthly habit, not a one-time task.
1. Verify the profile and claim ownership
An unverified profile is less likely to show in search, and anyone could suggest edits to it. Sign in at business.google.com with an account the business owns (not a former employee’s or a past agency’s), and add a second owner so you never get locked out.
2. Pick the most specific primary category
This is the single most important setting. Choose the category that describes what you are, not everything you do: “HVAC contractor” rather than “Contractor,” “Cosmetic dentist” only if that is the core of the practice. Then add a few secondary categories for real services you offer, such as “Air conditioning repair service” or “Emergency dental service.”
3. Use your real business name, nothing more
Google’s guidelines say your name should match your real-world name, and adding taglines, services or locations to it can get the profile suspended. (Source: Google guidelines) “Smith Plumbing” is fine. “Smith Plumbing | 24/7 Emergency Plumber Dallas” is a risk unless that is your legal, signed name. Put those details in your categories, services and description instead.
4. Get address, service area and phone exactly right
If customers come to you, show your address. If you travel to customers and work from home, Google asks service-area businesses to hide the address and list the cities or ZIP codes you serve. Use a local phone number and keep the name, address and phone identical on your website and major directories.
5. Set regular hours and keep them current
Whitespark’s survey ranks “open at the time of search” in the top five map ranking factors. Wrong hours also cost you customers who show up to a locked door. Add “More hours” for things like delivery, drive-through or emergency service if they differ from your main hours.
6. Write a description that answers “why you”
You get up to 750 characters. Lead with what you do and where, then mention two or three specifics: licensed and insured, same-day appointments, family-owned since a certain year. Skip links and promotional language.
7. Add services or products with short descriptions
List each core service (for example “Water heater installation” or “Teeth whitening”). This helps your profile match more specific searches and tells customers what you actually handle.
8. Upload real photos, then keep adding them
Show your storefront or truck, your team, your work and your space. Real, recent photos build trust far faster than stock images. A roofer can add before-and-after shots after each job; a café can add new menu items each season.
9. Ask for reviews and reply to every one
Ask happy customers right after the job with a direct review link (Google gives you one in the profile). Reply to each review within a few days, thank people by name, and answer complaints calmly with a way to follow up offline. Never offer discounts in exchange for reviews; Google prohibits incentivized reviews. For scripts, timing by industry and the full rules, read our guide on how to get Google reviews.
10. Post updates and answer common questions
Short Google posts about offers, events or seasonal reminders keep the profile fresh. Add the questions customers ask most on the phone to your website FAQ and make sure your profile details answer them.
Quick-reference checklist
| Setting | What good looks like | How often to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verification and owners | Verified, at least two owners on business accounts | Once a year |
| Primary category | The most specific match for your core service | Twice a year |
| Business name | Matches signage and legal name, no keywords | When rebranding |
| Hours and special hours | Accurate, holidays confirmed in advance | Monthly, plus before each holiday |
| Photos | Real, recent, at least a few new each month | Monthly |
| Reviews | Every review answered within a few days | Weekly |
| Website link | Points to a fast, relevant page on your site | Twice a year |
Set your holiday hours now
Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are when wrong hours hurt most. Set them a few weeks ahead using Special hours: open your profile, choose Edit profile, then Hours, then Special hours, pick the date and enter your hours or mark it closed. (Source: Google Business Profile Help) Accurate hours are a small but important part of Google Business Profile optimization.
A few details from Google’s own help page that trip people up:
- Confirm holidays even if your hours are normal that day, so customers know the hours are accurate.
- Special hours replace that day’s regular hours, so re-enter any hours you want to keep.
- Special hours cover closures of up to six days in a row. For seven or more days, mark the business temporarily closed instead.
- Special hours only show if your profile is set to “Open with main hours.”
The same goes for any seasonal business. A pool service or an HVAC company that changes hours in winter should update them the week the change happens, not after the first annoyed customer review.
What a strong profile looks like by industry
| Industry | Primary category example | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC, plumbing, roofing | HVAC contractor, Plumber, Roofing contractor | Service area by city, emergency hours, job-site photos, review replies |
| Dental and medical | Dentist, Pediatric dentist | Accurate hours per provider, insurance info on the website, office photos |
| Restaurants and cafés | Specific cuisine (for example Mexican restaurant) | Menu link, holiday hours, food photos, reservation or order link |
| Law firms | Personal injury attorney, Family law attorney | Practice-area categories, office photos, a link to the matching practice page |
| Retail shops | Specific store type (for example Gift shop) | In-store products, holiday hours, storefront and interior photos |
For home service companies in particular, the profile and the website work as a pair. Our guide to website must-haves for HVAC, plumbing and roofing businesses covers the site side, and our home services website design page shows how we build those sites. Google Business Profile optimization looks a little different in every industry.
Common mistakes that hold profiles back
- Keyword-stuffed names. It may work for a few weeks, then a competitor reports it or Google suspends the profile.
- A broad primary category. “Contractor” competes with everyone and matches no one well.
- Showing a home address. Service-area businesses should hide it and list service areas instead.
- Old hours. Especially after a schedule change or around holidays.
- Unanswered reviews. A one-star review with no reply does more damage than the review itself.
- A website link to a slow or generic page. If the link sends people to a homepage that loads slowly on mobile, many will go back to the map and call the next business.
- Multiple profiles for one location. Duplicates split your reviews and can trigger suspension. Ask Google to merge or remove them.
Connect your profile to a website that converts
Your profile gets the click; your website closes the sale. Make sure the website link goes to the most relevant page (a location page for multi-location businesses, the main service page for single-location ones), that the name, address, phone and hours match the profile exactly, and that the page loads quickly on a phone with a clear call or quote button above the fold. Most of these mistakes undo good Google Business Profile optimization work, so check for them first. Google Business Profile optimization works best when your website backs up every detail on the profile.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Your investment is time: setting it up properly and keeping it current.
How long does it take to see results after optimizing my profile?
Fixes like a better primary category or correct hours can show up within days to a few weeks. Reviews and photos build over months. Distance from the searcher still matters, so expect the biggest gains in the area closest to your location or service base.
Can I add my city or main service to my business name?
Only if it is part of your real, signed business name. Google’s guidelines treat extra keywords in the name as a violation that can lead to suspension. Use categories, services and your description for those words instead.
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
Yes. The profile helps people find you, but your website is where they compare you, check details and request a quote. A matching, fast website also supports the prominence signals Google uses for local ranking.
